Tradruk Monastery

Location of the Tradruk Monastery: 

Trandruk monastery lies on the southern side Mt. Gangpo Ri, on the east bank of the Yarlung River, about 2 kilometers south of Tradrug,five kilometers (three miles) south of Tsedang on the road leading to Yumbu Lakhang.

 

Brief introduction of the Tradruk Monastery:

Tradruk Temple is one of the earliest Buddhist Temples in Tibetan history. Built in 641 A.D,  it is the winter palace of the King and Princess Wencheng in Tsedang. It contains the precious relics the Pear Tangkha, which, 2 meters in length, 1.2 meters in breadth, is made of 29026 pears and different precious stone by Naidong during the reign of Pamodrupa Kingdom.

 

Legend of the Tradruk Monastery:

It is said that there is an evil dragon used to disturb his people, King Songtsen Gampo turned into a roc to conquer the evil dragon. After that, King Songtsan Gampo established the temple to suppress the ogress in order to prosper his kingdom. That is the origin of its name, meaning a roc conquering a dragon.

 

 

Tips:

You can get a public bus from NaiDong Road in Tsedang to Trandruk Monastery for 2 RMB. Alternatively it costs 10 RMB to get there by motor tricycle or 5 RMB to by local tractor. As it's only 2 kilometers from NaiDong Road to the Monastery, you can walk there in about an hour.
